GUIDELINES FOR COMPLETING GRANT APPLICATION FORM

The Social Worker's Educational Trust was established in 1972 by the British Association of Social Workers. It manages funds that are used to:

  • assist qualified social workers to develop their knowledge and skill

  • encourage research into social work practice and education

  • educate the public in the nature of social work

  • The Trust has limited funds, gained mostly from an annual subscription from BASW, and therefore provides only small Grants (usually in the range of £100 - £300) to experienced qualified social workers who are undertaking further professional study or research.

In addition, competitive Scholarships are awarded each year; for instance the Anne Cummins Scholarship for health related social work research. Scholarship application should NOT be made using the grant form.

The Trust CANNOT assist with funding for INITIAL QUALIFYING courses in social work. Enquiries for these can be addressed to the appropriate Social Care Council for your locality.

Guidelines for the completion of the Grant Application Form

Please read these before completing the Form.

    1) Applicants should be qualified social workers who have completed at least two years of post-qualifying social work practice, working or intending to work in the U.K. BASW membership will be taken into account.

    2) Assistance with training courses or projects which will develop the applicant's social work practice in the U.K. can be considered. Normally only courses or training given by a recognized training/education provider will be supported. Details of the course/training should be included with the Application Form - preferably a brief course description issued by the provider. Applicants should include whether the course/training is towards the Post Qualifying or Advanced Award in Social Work.

    3) The sum requested from the Trust can be used for fees or expenses incurred (e.g. travel; presentation of dissertation; books etc). Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively.

    4) Where the total sum needed is higher than that requested from the Trust, an indication of ability to meet the balance of the fees/costs from other sources MUST be given.

    5) Grants for courses of more than 1 year's duration are made on an annual basis, subject to re-application. Continuation depends on the grantee's successful completion of the year's training, and the level of Trust funds. No applicant may receive more than £1,000 in grants.

    6) Application may be made at any time of the year, and will be considered at the next available meeting of the Trustees. These normally occur in February, June and October.

    7) The Trustees expect that successful applicants inform the Trust of the completion of their course/project

    8) No further grant application will be considered within 3 years of the completion of a supported training course or project.
